NPPES NPI Information

The NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued to health care providers in the United States.

  • Every physician is issued an individual NPI.

  • If your practice is a corporation or group, it will also be issued a practice NPI.

Effective May 23, 2008, only NPI numbers must be used on insurance claims. Legacy identifiers (such as Medicare, PIN, and UPIN numbers) are no longer valid on claims.
